Steven Torres (President) is the Program Director for the Hospital-Based Violence Intervention Program of Acenda Integrated Health partnering with Inspira Hospitals in Cumberland & Gloucester Counties. He was a former Mental Health Therapist at the Certified Community Behavioral Health Clinic with Acenda Integrated Health. Mr. Torres has been in the mental health field for 33 years. Throughout the years, he has held multiple positions such as Case Manager, Psychiatric Emergency Services Screener, Psychiatric Emergency Services Supervisor, Disaster Response Crisis Counselor, Bilingual Therapist, Outpatient Coordinator, and Outpatient Director. He has previously served as the Cultural Competency Committee chairperson for Acenda Integrated Health. Additionally, he serves on the Division of Mental Health and Addiction Services Multicultural Services Committee and sits on the Salem City Community Violence Reduction Project Steering Committee. He always had a deep passion for making a difference in the community and helping others in need. Mr. Torres is a native of Penns Grove, where he was born and raised. He is the son of parents & grandparents of migrant farmworkers. Steven Torres graduated from Penns Grove High School in 1988. Additionally, he went on to pursue his post-education, becoming the first of his family’s second-generation to graduate with a Bachelors Degree in Social Work from Rutgers University in 1993. He went back later to pursue his Master’s degree in 2006. In graduate school, Mr. Torres battled and defeated cancer twice, where The 700 Club did a feature interview of his story in 2013. He graduated in 2010 from Capella University with honors with a GPA of 3.99 with a Master’s Degree in Counseling Studies. Mr. Steven Torres has had numerous accolades and memberships throughout his career. He was nominated to the National Society of Leadership and Success with Capella University. In 1992, he attended a major conference in California, The National Council of La Raza, which focused on Latinos in gangs and films. Steven graduated from The Hispanic Leadership Fellowship Institute as an intern with the New Jersey Department of Community Affairs’ Center for Hispanic Policy Research and Development. In 1998 he was recognized as Outstanding Young Man of America. In 2002, he was honored with the Salem County Resolution for Developing and Assisting Mental Health Triage/Disaster Counseling at Ground Zero on September 11, 2001 attacks in New York as he continued to provide mental health first aid to survivors and first responders for an additional five months post 9/11. He is the recipient of The 42nd Annual Hispanic Heritage Awards Gala Award. He previously held the position of Vice President board member for the Puerto Rican Action Committee of Southern Jersey. He previously served on the Pastoral Relations Committee of Sharptown United Methodist church. He was a previous board member for the Salem Health & Wellness Foundation from August 2003-July 2009, and former Board Member of the YMCA of Salem County. Mr. Torres is a highly enthusiastic Philadelphia Eagles fan. He resides in Pennsville, NJ, with his wife, Shawn, whom he has known since the fourth grade. He has a Greyhound rescue, Charlie Brown, his three Yorkies: Linus, Lulu, Summer; and adopted Italian Greyhound, Peppermint Patty. Steven has four children: Ricky, Christopher, Stephanie, and Brittany. He also has three stepchildren that he adores: Jorjah, Jeffrey, and Colyn. He presently has 10 grandchildren.
